Anytime, Anywhere

April 6, 2017

Jeff and I met one early Friday morning at a networking event.  The first time I approached him to do business with my interior design company he declined.  He didn’t know it, but I decided at that moment I didn’t like him.

One day he changed his business model, called me, and we started working together.  I found him easy to talk to, easy to work through complex problems, someone I could count on, and not long afterwards we became friends.

I was married and underneath a perfect all American man, was an abusive relationship.  I never told Jeff or anyone. In those days I was convinced I contributed to my husband’s mean and erratic behavior and our relationship could work if I tried harder.  Another part of me deeper down knew my spouse had a personality disorder. I helped him keep his and our dirty little secret.  Three days after my 40th birthday my ex-husband did the most compassionate thing he could for me.  He left.

There are people at that time in my life who regularly checked in on me and assured me I was okay.  Jeff was one of them. Left with an empty house, grief and a lot of confusion I asked Jeff to become my roommate.

I went through the grief process alone mostly, but with Jeff just a few yards away.  We talked through my stages of grief.  We talked through the truth. We talked about my anger, shame, and  sorrow.  We talked through my nightmares, and sometimes no words were spoken while I cried.  Our friendship healed me. Months later my home transformed into a happy, safe place. Music would play from Jeff’s room, and one day I knew I was in love with him.

A short time after our relationship bloomed Jeff said he wrote me a song.  This is Anytime Anywhere, quite possibly my favorite song ever:

Anytime Anywhere

The Ghosts behind you

Are showing up in your dreams

The words people say ain’t what they mean

We lock away, what we can’t understand

And fumble in the dark doing all we can

Anytime, Anywhere I will wait for you here

Anytime, Anywhere it’s all the same

Anytime, Anywhere, I will follow you there

Anytime, Anywhere it’s all the same

Broken and bloody

We limp on down the road

Barely making the next mile

Forgiveness and pity

And sorrow it ain’t pretty

But through it all together we will go

Anytime, Anywhere I will wait for you here

Anytime, Anywhere it’s all the same

Anytime, Anywhere, I will follow you there.

Anytime, Anywhere it’s all the same

Where we land.  I just don’t know

Life is too hard the dice never tell

Let’s roll together

And maybe we will find

A place that gives us piece of mind

Anytime, Anywhere I will wait for you here

Anytime, Anywhere it’s all the same

Anytime, Anywhere, I will follow you there

Anytime, Anywhere it’s all the same

It’s all the same.

Listen here.
